Introduction to Biblical End Time Prophecies

End time prophecies form a significant portion of biblical literature, with approximately one-third of Scripture dedicated to prophetic content. These prophecies provide believers with insight into God's sovereign plan for humanity's future and the culmination of His redemptive work.

While interpretations may vary among theologians and denominations, the core message remains consistent: God has revealed His plans through His prophets, Christ will return, judgment will come, and God's kingdom will be established in fullness. Understanding these prophecies equips believers to live with hope, purpose, and spiritual vigilance.

"Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand." - Revelation 1:3

This study will explore key components of end time prophecy found throughout Scripture, with particular focus on the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Matthew 24, and Revelation. Our aim is not to set dates or make specific predictions, but to understand the biblical framework of end time events and their spiritual implications for believers today.

The Great Tribulation

Stormy skies representing tribulation

The Great Tribulation refers to an unprecedented period of suffering and divine judgment that will come upon the earth in the last days. Jesus described it as a time of distress unequaled since the beginning of the world (Matthew 24:21). This period is characterized by intense spiritual deception, extreme persecution of believers, global warfare, natural disasters, and divine judgments as detailed in Revelation chapters 6-19.

During this period, the Antichrist will rise to power, establishing a global governing system that opposes God and persecutes His people. The false prophet will lead a global religious system that demands worship of the Antichrist. The tribulation will culminate in the battle of Armageddon and the glorious return of Christ.

"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened." - Matthew 24:21-22

While Christians hold different views regarding the timing of the rapture in relation to the tribulation (pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, or post-tribulation), all agree that God promises to sustain His people through trials, whether by removing them from tribulation or strengthening them through it.

The Antichrist

Symbolic dark figure representing opposition to Christ

Scripture reveals that in the end times, a powerful figure known as the Antichrist will emerge on the world stage. Also called "the beast," "the man of lawlessness," and "the son of perdition," this individual will oppose everything that is of God while claiming divine status for himself. The Antichrist will gain unprecedented political power, establishing a global government and requiring allegiance from all nations.

According to biblical prophecy, the Antichrist will:

  • Make a seven-year covenant with Israel but break it halfway through (Daniel 9:27)
  • Perform miraculous signs and wonders to deceive people (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)
  • Desecrate the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem (Matthew 24:15)
  • Establish a system requiring a mark (666) for buying and selling (Revelation 13:16-18)
  • Persecute those who refuse to worship him (Revelation 13:7)

"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." - 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

While the spirit of antichrist has been at work throughout history (1 John 2:18), the Antichrist himself will appear during the final tribulation period. His rule will end with the return of Christ, who will defeat him at the Battle of Armageddon and cast him into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20).

Timeline of End Time Events

The Rapture

Christ returns in the air to gather His church. Believers are caught up to meet Him and receive glorified bodies.

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds." - 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

The Tribulation Begins

A seven-year period of judgment begins on earth. The Antichrist confirms a covenant with Israel.

"And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week..." - Daniel 9:27

Midpoint: Abomination of Desolation

The Antichrist breaks his covenant, stops temple sacrifices, and sets himself up to be worshipped.

"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet..." - Matthew 24:15

The Great Tribulation

The final 3.5 years bring intensified judgments and persecution as described in Revelation.

"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world..." - Matthew 24:21

The Second Coming

Christ returns visibly to earth with His saints to defeat the Antichrist at Armageddon.

"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True..." - Revelation 19:11

The Millennial Kingdom

Christ reigns on earth for 1,000 years with His saints in a time of peace and righteousness.

"And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years." - Revelation 20:4

Final Judgment

Satan's final rebellion is crushed. The Great White Throne judgment occurs for all unbelievers.

"And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it..." - Revelation 20:11

New Heaven and New Earth

God creates a new heaven and earth. The New Jerusalem descends. Eternity with God begins.

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away..." - Revelation 21:1

The Second Coming of Christ

Dramatic sky representing Christ's return

The Second Coming of Christ is the blessed hope of every believer—the literal, physical return of Jesus Christ to earth in power and glory. Unlike His first coming as a suffering servant, Jesus will return as conquering King to establish His righteous rule on earth.

Scripture teaches that Christ's return will be:

  • Visible to all (Revelation 1:7, "Every eye will see Him")
  • Physical and literal (Acts 1:11, "This same Jesus... will come back in the same way")
  • Glorious and triumphant (Matthew 24:30, "Coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory")
  • Accompanied by His saints and angels (1 Thessalonians 3:13, Jude 14)

"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him." - Revelation 1:7

At His return, Christ will defeat the Antichrist and his armies at the Battle of Armageddon, bind Satan, judge the nations, and establish His millennial kingdom on earth. The precise timing of these events remains known only to God the Father (Matthew 24:36), reminding believers to live in constant readiness for His appearing.

Preparing for Christ's Return

As we study end time prophecies, the ultimate purpose is not merely to satisfy curiosity about future events, but to be spiritually prepared for Christ's return. The knowledge of these things should prompt us to:

"And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming." - 1 John 2:28

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." - Titus 2:13

Let us live with urgency in sharing the gospel, with purity in our personal conduct, and with vigilant hearts fixed on the promise of His coming. May we be found faithful when He returns.

Breaking Free from Religious Bondage: Seek the True Light Breaking Free from Religious Bondage: Seek the True Light Many today believe they are worshipping God, yet they are trapped in religious slavery, because they follow human traditions, false teachings, and leaders who mislead them. Instead of seeking God's truth, they are bound by the opinions of men and doctrines that have no basis in the Bible. Some say, "The church is in the heart," yet their actions show no fear of God. Others replace obedience to God’s laws with emotional Christianity, believing that good intentions are enough while ignoring His commandments. This is the same deception that led Israel astray in the past. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. - 2 Timothy 4:3 (KJV) The Rise ...

About the Sabbath: A Biblical Perspective

God's Sabbath Day Remains Unchanged: A Biblical Perspective Published on | The Eternal Truths Church Of God seventh-day Introduction: The True Sabbath in Scripture In a world of diverse religious practices and interpretations, one truth remains constant: God's commandments were given for a purpose and are eternal. Among these is the fourth commandment regarding the Sabbath day, which calls us to "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy" (Exodus 20:8). Today, we'll examine what Scripture truly teaches about the Sabbath, address common misconceptions about Sunday worship, and call for a return to biblical truth similar to King Josiah's reforms. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do n...
